First Line Treatment for Symptoms of ADHD in Adults

The first line treatment for ADHD is pharmacological, and usually consists of stimulant medication, such as methylphenidate (Ritalin) or amphetamines (Adderall). Stimulant medication also seems to be very effective for short-term treatments and has shown reduce of symptoms in about 70% of ADHD patients, including behavioural responses. However, continued use of these treatments has shown that the human brain can adapt to stimulant medication and change the brain’s structural modification so that it can be continuously activated by these substances. Essentially, repeated use of these first line treatments may decrease beneficial effects over time. Source: Psychedelics as a Potential Treatment Option in ADHD. Published in 2020

Microdosing As An Alternative Treatment for ADHD

Psychedelic drugs have recently gained popularity among both recreational and scientific communities, and some preliminary research suggests promising results when used clinically. Microdosing, which features the use of sub-threshold doses to achieve therapeutic effects rather than a “trip”, may also lead to significant improvements in some psychological disorders. We wrote a blog post with a roundup of psilocybin news where you can learn more about other mental health benefits.

Recent research has shown microdosing with psychedelics to medicate for ADHD symptoms in adults has shown that within a naturalistic case study of 2-4 weeks, the majority of participants showed decreases in ADHD symptoms and increased well-being after implementing a microdosing protocol during the timeframe of the study. Microdosing is the practice of consuming a sub-perceptual amount of a psychedelic substance, usually one-twentieth to one-tenth of an active dose taken once every three days. Active doses of psychedelics are likely to cause impairments and hallucinations, but the goal of microdosing is to avoid these effects and instead enhance one’s ability to focus and perform creatively, professionally, and personally, results that are thought to occur over time.

Those who have attempted self-treatment of ADHD through microdosing most commonly utilize lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) or psilocybin, the psychoactive ingredient in magic mushrooms. Both have similar effects and benefits reported. Some have also benefited from microdosing ibogaine, which has stimulant properties that may help with focus and motivation.
