what is microdosing? frequently asked questions about magic mushrooms

Microdosing has been popping up all over, from Silicon Valley, and now into mainstream daily life, but what is microdosing, and what should you know. Keep reading to answer all your questions about microdosing!

What Is Microdosing?

Microdosing is the practice of taking sub-perceptual amounts of psychedelics to benefit health and wellbeing. Typical substances microdosed include magic mushrooms (psilocybin) or LSD. Some people have even reported microdosing with THC.

Will I be tripping?

No.  A microdose is 1/20th to 1/10th of a full psychedelic dose. The effects are sub-perceptual, meaning you should feel more focused and energized and remain fully cognizant and capable of going about your daily life. It allows you to be more focused and creative but should not negatively impact your ability to effectively meet your usual responsibilities.

What methods of microdosing are there?

There are many ways to microdose, however, some of the most popular methods are ingesting capsules, powder mixes and tinctures.  Eating raw mushrooms works too but is very hard to accurately determine precise dosing.

Is microdosing safe?

Microdosing has been found to be very beneficial for most people. As more research is being completed and studies released support is growing for the therapeutic use of psilocybin. Death or illness from toxicity is unheard of.

One thing is for certain – with microdosing, there is no risk of having a “bad trip” or experiencing intense psychedelic effects. Taking a microdose is the ideal way to be introduced to psychedelics safely and comfortably.

Are there medications I can’t take with mushrooms?

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) are the most commonly prescribed medications for many psychological disorders, including depression, OCD, PTSD, and anxiety. SSRIs work by temporarily boosting serotonin levels which, in rare cases, can lead to serotonin syndrome, which can be fatal. It is therefore not safe to take psilocybin, even in microdoses, when on an SSRI.

Can I overdose?

A physical overdose is not a danger with psilocybin — you will not die from psilocybin mushrooms. However, if you take large doses there are sometimes undesirable outcomes, that could include varying degrees of fear, anxiety, panic and feeling out of control. There are some things you can do as you ride out the trip, including Breath.  Use your breath as an anchor. Move your body. This can help you get out of your head and start feeling more comfortable. Eat. This will allow you to feel more grounded and in control. Get outside. Being in nature often helps to relax people feeling stressed out from a bad mushroom experience. Listen to music. Something soft and instrumental.

How does microdosing feel?

About an hour or two after ingesting the microdose, people notice an increase in focus and energy. Many users find that it helps with weaning off — and staying off — anti-depressants. It can help lessen the side effects of withdrawal and even mitigate depression. Many speak to the drug’s ability to increase empathy, too.

Stacking Supplements to Optimize Microdosing Experiences

While different protocols for “stacking”, or the use of different substances to synergize and promote the beneficial properties of complementary compounds in a formula, exist, a true focus should be placed on psilocybin. Bright Future’s formula calls for a host of functional mushrooms to create a mycological entourage effect between the functional and medicinal mushrooms providing an overall synergy among the compounds in the formula.

Lion’s Mane is a medicinal (non-hallucinogenic) mushroom which has legitimate, neuroprotective qualities, promotes the production of nerve growth factor, and is considered a nootropic within brain-hacking communities, aiding in the relief of depression and anxiety.  Interestingly, the pharmacological action of Psilocybe cubensis (“magic mushrooms”) is such that it substitutes for serotonin (5HT) in the brain and acts as a more effective neurotransmitter thus activating neurogenesis, forming new neurons and subsequently, new pathways of knowledge.  The benefits of this combination is optimal for achieving maximal benefits from the mushrooms.

The Bright Future stack has been touted to be effective in improving cognition and performance by many, stating various remarkable benefits, including its ability to stimulate myelin production–a key factor in nerve cell growth. Indeed, the benefits of this stack go beyond performance enhancement and have serious implications on its

Do Antidepressants, Like SSRIs, Make Microdosing Less Effective?

Dr. Fadiman said that it’s not likely that antidepressants decrease the efficacy of microdosing, as many people start microdosing to help them get off SSRIs that may no longer be working. Microdosing does seem to help people during the period in which they are tapering off SSRIs – it seems to help the process go more smoothly and a bit quicker.

Are there studies that support microdosing?

While microdosing is currently very popular and is quickly emerging as a viable alternative to traditional medicine, it is still very new in terms of being “readopted” back into the world of legitimized medicine.  Numerous studies and research is currently being conducted around the world and showing immense promise.  Medical professionals and mental health proponents are rallying to decriminalize psilocybin and pull these medicinal fungi out of the darkness and into the forefront of medicine.

Are there preferred foods or supplements to microdose with?

Often when microdosing psilocybin it can be best to take on an empty stomach however, “stacking” (using different substances to synergize and promote the beneficial properties of complementary compounds in a formula) has proven to produce phenomenal results.
